Most parents try their best to fulfill their kid’s physical needs. They provide them with meals, and warm clothes for winter, and put them to sleep at a reasonable hour. Parents do so much more without even the kid asking for it. 

On the contrary, the child’s mental and emotional needs may not be the priority or may not be as obvious. Only with good mental health, your child develops socially and learn new skills. Most importantly, they need to be emotionally stable to develop self-confidence and high self-esteem. 

So many children fail to achieve things in life even though they have the right potential. The main problem is that their confidence level is low and they underestimate themselves. Most often it leads to depression and they don’t want to do anything about it. Here are some effective tips to support the mental and emotional well-being of your children so that they can grow positively in their environment. 

Teach them To Express their Feelings

One of the most important things to teach your child is to recognize what they are feeling and how to express them in words. As a parent, you can help your children grow by teaching them words that are used to express emotions and using examples when they feel the emotions themselves. You can also explain and help them understand when such feelings arise in others as well.

Sometimes, the kids don’t express themselves because they think that their feelings are bad. But it is the problem that they are not able to talk about. This is the reason why most children are unexpressive because they think all feelings except for “happy” ones are negative and shameful. 

Allow your kids to explore and share different feelings so they think of them as normal and healthy. This helps them have better self-esteem and stronger relationships. 

Check Your Kid’s Behavior and Actions 

Not all kids are expressive; some show their behavior if they are having a hard time. If your child acts out of character or gets into trouble more often, then it is a sign that they need emotional support to cope with it. It is pretty unhealthy when your child can’t speak out about what they are feeling. 

Even if the problem does not seem to be severe, you have to grab it in the beginning. All children initially need guidance about emotions and relationships in life. 

There are many ways to support early emotional learning so that your child grows up to be a confident and healthy person. Besides your child, you can also educate yourself on emotions so that you can teach them as well.

Encourage Their Creative Side 

It’s our duty as adults to teach children how to understand emotions and relationships. You can teach them from your learnings and experience. Don’t make the mistake of comparing your children and blaming them for not being like their siblings. Since every child is unique and you need to figure out how to reach them individually. 

Look for activities they truly enjoy that help them to express themselves. Encourage their engagement in activities like playing games, sports, art, writing, photography, dance, or whatever it may be. Doing creative things can help your child to cope with difficult feelings and be open to emotions. 

Show Them What Life is About

You need to show your kids the real meaning of life and what to expect as they grow up. Teach your kid that every person will experience times of struggle and strength in their lifetime.

Let them know that if they struggle in life then it is normal and there is no shame in it. But make sure they are not stuck in their struggles, thinking they are not good enough. There should be a balance between thinking and doing something to overcome it. Help them to learn their natural skills and passions so that they can build upon them and maintain their high self-esteem. 

Check What Your Kids Think About Themselves 

If a child picks on negative feelings early on then it is most likely associated with low self-esteem. It often starts with hearing negative thoughts about themselves from others and repeating them in their heads. When such feelings are repeated about self and the world, it can lead to mental health struggles that last for a long time. 

So you need to pay closer attention to your child’s comments about him or herself and others. If they harbour more negative feelings, it is a sign they don’t feel good about themselves. They need your support to change their thinking and follow a positive path. Just like they repeat negative thoughts in their mind, they need to start to have positive thinking. Once the child gets used to the practice of positive thinking, they tend to follow it automatically.
